How to Care for Your Western Wear So It Lasts

A good pair of boots, a quality hat, and authentic western wear aren't cheap, and they shouldn't be treated like they are. If you've invested in the real thing—whether you're working a ranch, hitting the rodeo circuit, or just living the cowboy lifestyle in Nashville and beyond—you need to know how to take care of it. Neglect your gear, and you'll be replacing it every season. Treat it right, and it'll outlast you.

The difference between a cowboy who looks like he just stepped out of a picture and one who looks like he's been through a dust storm isn't luck. It's maintenance. Here's what you need to know.

Your Boots Need Respect

Your boots are the foundation of everything. They take the most abuse, so they deserve the most attention. After a hard day at the ranch or a night out, wipe them down with a dry cloth to remove dust and dirt. Don't let that grime sit. It works into the leather and breaks down the fibers faster than time itself.

Once a month, use a leather conditioner. Not the cheap stuff from a gas station. Get something made for western boots. Work it in with a soft cloth, using small circular motions. This keeps the leather supple and prevents cracking. Cracked boots are done boots.

Fast drying ruins leather. Stuff wet boots with newspaper and let them dry slowly at room temperature.

If you get caught in heavy rain or your boots get soaked, don't panic and don't throw them by a heater. Stuff them with newspaper to absorb moisture and let them dry slowly at room temperature. Fast drying ruins leather. And if you're serious about your gear, invest in cedar shoe trees. They'll hold your boots in shape and keep them smelling like an actual cowboy instead of something that got left in a gym bag.
