A neck scarf isn't some fancy accessory you throw on when you're trying to impress someone at a Nashville gallery opening. It's a practical piece of western wear that's been around longer than most of us have been alive. Cowboys wore them to keep dust out of their face on cattle drives. Ranch hands tied them tight when they were working in the wind. Rodeo riders still wear them because they work, not because they look good hanging in a closet.

Start with a square scarf, roughly 22 to 28 inches on each side. Fold it in half diagonally so you've got a triangle. Drape it around your neck with the point hanging down your back. Take the two ends in front and tie them together at the base of your neck. Keep it loose enough to move but tight enough it won't slip when you're working.
