How to Choose the Right Cowboy Hat for Your Face Shape

There's an old saying in Nashville and out on the ranch: a man's hat tells you something about his character. Whether you're built like a bull or lean as a fence post, there's a cowboy hat that'll sit right on your head and make you look like you belong in western wear that actually fits.

The trick isn't magic, and it isn't about following some fashion magazine's rules. It's about understanding your face shape and picking a hat that works with what you've got.

Finding Your Face Shape: The First Step

Before you walk into any western wear shop, you need to know what you're working with. Stand in front of a mirror and be honest about your face shape. There are basically five main face shapes: oval, round, square, long, and heart-shaped.

Each one of these responds differently to brim width, crown height, and hat style. Get this part wrong, and you'll look like you're wearing somebody else's hat. Get it right, and you'll look like you stepped straight out of a rodeo or a Nashville honky-tonk.

Pro Tip: Take a photo of yourself straight-on in natural light. This will help you objectively see your face shape and bring the image with you when shopping for hats.

The Oval Face: Your Best Bet

If you've got an oval face, you're in luck. Oval-faced folks can pull off just about any cowboy hat style without looking foolish. Your face has balanced proportions, so you've got room to play around.

A classic Stetson or a well-fitted hat will look natural on you.
