FORGED WITH GRIT

The Best Hiking Trails Within Two Hours of Nashville

If you're living in Nashville or just passing through Marathon Village, you probably didn't come here expecting to find yourself knee-deep in wilderness. But that's the thing about Tennessee—it doesn't take much driving before the city noise fades and you're looking at real country. We're talking ridgelines, creek beds, and views that remind you why folks settled in these hills in the first place. Whether you're a seasoned ranch hand or just someone who appreciates honest work and open air, these trails are worth your time.

Laurel Falls via Cataract Falls

About ninety minutes southeast of Nashville sits a trail that doesn't waste your time with false summits or switchback nonsense. The Laurel Falls trail runs just 2.6 miles round trip through Smoky Mountains terrain, following a creek that does the work for you. The waterfall at the end is the kind that makes the climb worthwhile—steady flow, good spray, and the kind of quiet you won't find anywhere near town.

Wear proper boots, bring water, and don't expect to be back before sundown if you're taking your time. This isn't a trail for cutting corners, and neither should you be.

Head northeast about seventy miles and you'll find yourself at a place that feels like it belongs in another era. Burgess Falls drops 136 feet straight down, and the park surrounding it has trails that loop through what feels like genuine wilderness. The main waterfall trail is short but steep—maybe 1.5 miles total—and you'll earn every step.
