A hundred year old building with a shop in it

We're in Marathon Village, right outside downtown Nashville, in the 1907 home of Marathon Motor Works. Brick, timber and a floor that has been walked on for more than a hundred years. The building has its own story.

Our own line runs the length of the shop, and we stand it next to a handful of brands we actually rate. Everything is out where you can put your hands on it.

The story

The man behind the mark

Steel & Saddle started with founder Blake Smith, a stack of western films, and a stubborn idea that the old West still had a few verses left in it.

Nashville Voyager sat down with Blake to talk about the brand, the town, and the road that got him here.

Common questions

Before you drive over

Where exactly are you?

Marathon Village, Suite 21, 1200 Clinton St, Nashville, TN 37203. Right outside downtown Nashville, a few minutes from Broadway. Parking on site. We're next to Olive Oil Co. and down the hall from Southern Engine Deli.

When are you open?

Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday, 10 to 4. Friday and Saturday, 10 to 4:30. Closed Monday and Tuesday. No appointment, just turn up while the doors are open.

Is everything in the shop available online?

Our own tees, hoodies and caps are online, with a large selection in store. The hat bar is in store only, but cowboy hats and a few of the other brands on our floor can also be bought online at Steel & Saddle Outfitters. For everything else on the floor, come see us.

What happens at the hat bar?

Pick a hat off the wall and we build it with you. Brim shaped while you wait, a ribbon band made by hand or one we carry, feathers and pins if you want them. Full customization runs $40, and the branding iron is free with any cowboy hat. Bringing a group? See the hat bar and send us your date.

Do you shape the crown?

Brim only. The crown comes the way the maker built it and we leave it that way.

Where are the cowboy hats made?

Our 5X wool USA hat comes out of the oldest cowboy hat factory still standing in the country. The rest of the wall is 5X wool cashmere and straw.
